Run Away

Has anything ever made you feel like running...far, far away?
I felt that way the last time I shopped at the mall...I got this extremely uncomfortable feeling that made me feel like hightailing it out of there as soon as possible!

And I'm not talking about the obvious things like immodest or ridiculous fashions...I am referring to the atmosphere...the mood...the feeling that the stores in the mall convey.  I felt bathed in an atmosphere of pride and haughtiness...of the message that "I'm cool"..."Look at me"..."I'm 'in'...I'm 'of' the world." Hmm...seems like I've heard a warning about that message somewhere before...

If you think that message is accidental or imagined, think again....
Any beginning marketing student can tell you that every single sight/sound/aroma is quite intentional. Nothing is accidental or there by chance. The atmosphere is completely scripted to convey a certain message, and to give a certain feeling...a feeling, it seems, that is highly attractive to the young people shopping there.

I don't know about you, but I'm off to put on my running shoes...

  1. We don't go to the mall very often, but when we do, I feel like I'm a farm girl visiting the big city for the very first time.

So, given your post, I guess that's good!

  2. I know exactly how you feel. It's as much physically draining as emotional.

    Stupid Malls...

  3. These are the very reasons why I avoid the malls at all cost. I only go if there are no other options. I can't stand malls! They're noisy, crowded, and over-stimulating!

    Great Post!

  6. Great post, Paula! After our last trip to the mall, I have vowed to never go back. I (we) felt like fish out of water. The atmosphere was one that I do not want my children in ever again. Thanks for sharing! I found your blog at the Imperfect Housewife link up and I look forward to reading more of your posts. :) I would love for you to stop by and visit me at http://oliveplantsallaroundmytabl.blogspot.com

  7. I like you, unlike many people in the world you seem pretty normal! :) You seem like you don't only care about annoying things. I mean don't get me wrong I like shopping and cute boutiques as much as the next girl but that's not ALL I care about.
